England along with Welsh Pitted Together for 2027 Rugby World Cup in Australia

Rugby World Cup 2027 draw ceremony
The pool stage draw was overseen by sporting icons including former All Black Dan Carter.

The English side together with their Welsh counterparts find themselves placed in an identical group for the 2027 Rugby World Cup, setting up a major early clash in Australia. They are joined in Group F by the Tongan Ikale Tahi and Zimbabwe.

This draw echoes their famous meeting in the group phase of the 2015 tournament, where Wales' victory at Twickenham contributed to the English team's shock early exit.

Key Group Draws

Ireland alongside Scotland also share a group once again, replicating the scenario from the 2023 edition. In that tournament, they secured a 36-14 victory, with Scotland failing to advance to the quarter-finals.

Los Teros and Os Lobos, both impressed as surprise packages in France, round out that same group.

Notably, the victors of both Pool D and Pool F cannot meet defending champions and top-ranked the Springboks until the showpiece match, assuming the Springboks win their own group.

Knockout Implications

Should the groups conclude according to the current global standings, further top favourites like the All Blacks and France would remain separated from both the English and the Irish all the way to the final.

In that scenario, Argentina would be the other top-ranked nation on that half of the elimination bracket as those northern hemisphere teams.

Hosts Draw Blockbuster Fixture

Hosts Australia have been drawn together with their great rivals and three-time winners New Zealand in Pool A.

The Wallabies will kick off the World Cup in the city of Perth on 1 October 2027 in a marquee match designed to launch the event.

In other groups, holders South Africa have been paired with Italy, Georgia and Romania. The French team are grouped with the Brave Blossoms, future hosts the USA and Samoa.

Larger Tournament for 2027

Los Pumas will take on Fiji, Spain and Canada as the tournament grows to twenty-four nations from the twenty who competed in France.

This edition will introduce a last-16 stage for the very first time in the competition's history.

Although the victor of Pool F may be kept apart from some of the game's heavyweights initially, they will have to face the runner-up from Pool B – probably Italy – in the first knockout round.

A total of four of the remaining six group winners will face a third-placed side from the pool stages.
