Tetris Wouldn't Succeed at The Game Awards — An Additional Classification May Address This Issue

As any prominent honors show draws close, you'll find a clamor for the addition of new categories to honor overlooked contributions and delight the hearts of fans dedicated to specific genres.

A fellow writer made the case for a horror game category. It would be amazing. Equally deserving are tabletop games, representing someone's personal cause. But they will have to forgive me when I prioritize since similar to single-minded supporters, I have a cast-iron argument backing this proposal stands as crucial above others. The demand is this: We need a classification for brain-teasing titles.

Categorizing Game Types

Organizing artistic expressions defies precise measurement; opinions vary greatly, and inevitably spark debates and end in fuzzy definitions. There’s a reason film award organizations avoid this approach. But it is an essential concession for the industry of interactive entertainment, showing incredible range it's challenging to consider them one unified medium.

For comprehensive acknowledgment of achievement in video games to receive acknowledgment, while allowing diverse titles to compete fairly, classification by type becomes crucial.

Current Gaming Award Categories

Prominent interactive entertainment events currently feature genre categories for Action, Action/Adventure, Role-Playing, Fighting, Sim/Strategy, plus athletic and racing experiences. Together, these classifications successfully include numerous genres, and you can find room for most games within them.

Not so for brain-teasing titles. No suitable classification appears for their placement. Examine these examples from this year’s best games, each quite distinct: the architectural riddles of one title, fast-paced pattern recognition in a different title, thought-provoking social scenarios in another game. What category would fit them between these six categories? Unfortunately, nowhere.

The Representation Problem

There are dozens outstanding logic titles released every year that have no home at major award shows, unless they happen to qualify classification types such as Handheld titles, VR/AR Game, or the extremely competitive independent game categories.

  • A renowned logic title received no recognition completely in 2014
  • Another creative title was excluded in 2019
  • Popular arranging title was overlooked that year
  • Limited numbers of logic titles managed to sneak into independent or mobile categories

Significance of Puzzle Games

These are often compact experiences, yet the craft behind logic titles holds tremendous importance. Famous handheld logic titles count as most engaged experiences globally maintaining this status for an extended period.

The famous puzzle experience competes with well-known building titles for the title of best-selling game of all time; it’s also in the running for top gaming experience. Logic titles represent cornerstones within interactive entertainment, and they are in conversation with diverse game types.

Recommendation and Reasoning

Brain-teasers wouldn't encounter that issue. It would be easy to populate multiple candidates interesting, varied, worthy titles each ceremony simply — or rather, with difficulty, since numerous excellent numerous deserving experiences.

And to reiterate, these include experiences lacking appropriate categories at major gaming awards. Logic title developers operate at the challenging frontier interactive creation, developing some of essential manifestations of gaming itself. Comparable to cinema stunt performers, they merit acknowledgment. We shouldn't delay 35 years.
